Supporting employees

Some candidates need extra support or training to start well in their new mahi. Whether you’re recruiting, have a candidate in mind, or have already hired them, support may be available. Specific eligibility criteria must be met to access these supports.

From hiring to thriving

Talk to us early in the recruitment process about candidates who need extra help. We may be able to help make settling in as smooth as possible, and support you both to get what you need to succeed.

Disability or health related support

If your employee is a disabled person or requires health-related support, we can advise you and may be able to give financial assistance for workplace equipment, training or support if specific eligibility criteria are met.

Wages and training costs

For people who need extra help, we may be able to contribute towards wages or fund extra training. Your business, the candidate and the role will need to meet specific criteria to access these supports.

On-the-job support

We may be able to provide extra help to those that need it. Eligibility for these services depends on your business, your employee and their role.

Support for disabled employees or those with health conditions

It is primarily an employer responsibility to meet health or disability-related needs, but we may be able to help you provide a more accessible and supportive environment. This includes support for physical, mental health or neurodivergency-related needs. Your employee can apply for:

  • funding for workplace accommodations, such as large screens, adaptive equipment or software
  • funding for employee disability-related costs, such as transport, noise-cancelling headphones or use of a New Zealand Sign Language interpreter.

Helping you and your new employee

We may be able to support you to hire staff who need extra help and get them the skills needed to start mahi with you. If your business, your new employee and their role meet specific criteria we may be able to:

  • help to pay for training and qualifications
  • provide ongoing support and advice to help your employee to manage any challenges that come up
  • make a contribution towards wages. Contact us about this before your employee starts work.
